Welcome to all our new members and welcome back to all our less than new members! GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS == Getting Started == Hope you enjoyed the sweets at our table. If you need any help during the year with RedBrick services most of the answers can be found on wiki.redbrick.dcu.ie, but if you can't find what you're looking for on there just email helpdesk(a)redbrick.dcu.ie == EGM and First Year Rep election == Want to join our committee? We're holding elections for our first year representative on Wednesday 14th of October at 2.30pm in CG12. That's in the Henry Grattan building. You can nominate yourself or someone else. The first year rep's responsibility is to promote the interests of freshers to the rest of the RedBrick committee and let us know what it is freshers want us to do. They will also have to attend weekly committee meetings and help out in general. THERE WILL BE FREE PIZZA AT THE EGM. \o/ == Freshers' Ball == As most of you have probably heard, the RedBrick Freshers' Ball is being held TONIGHT (Thursday), upstairs in Matt Weldon's (The Slipper), which is opposite the Ballymun Road entrance to DCU. The event starts at 8pm and will include €3 drinks and featuring gw on jukebox; send your music requests to gw(a)redbrick.dcu.ie or coconut(a)redbrick.dcu.ie Don't forget that the theme is red, and we'll have prizes for best dressed, most unusual and most interesting outfits. Admission is FREE for RedBrick members, but if you're not a member you can sign up at the door. == Events == If you have any suggestions for any events, talks or workshops for the next year, please don't hesitate to contact the committee with your ideas. The address is: committee(a)redbrick.dcu.ie ADMIN ANNOUNCEMENTS == Changing your username === Have you gotten a username you don't like, or are you just fed up with your old one? Drop a line to admins(a)redbrick.dcu.ie with your current username and your desired username and we can sort it out for you; remember there's an 8 character limit though. == Wimax Trial == Last year we announced that Redbrick had been asked by ISS (formerly CSD) to participate in a trial of a new wimax system on campus, Due to the unavailability of the USB dongles before the summer break the trial never got started, but they have now arrived and we are once again collecting names of students interested in participating in the trial. This will involve reporting on your experience using the system to ISS using Moodle, in a way similar to the new e-mail system trial we ran last year. If your are interested in participating then send an email with your name, DCU e-mail address and semester time address to wimax(a)redbrick.dcu.ie. Your address will be used in conjunction with Google maps to determine the maximum range of the system. Please send this information by Friday Lunchtime at the latest, if the information is forwarded to ISS by this Friday we hope to be issuing the dongles Friday week. Again, welcome! Hey everyone, Emma here again. So just a quick update on what's happening this week. == Survey == If you haven't already done it, then here's your last chance to participate in the survey! Everyone who completes the survey is entered into a raffle to win a fantastic prize and we shall be announcing the winner of the raffle at the fresher's ball. Hi Everyone, Welcome back to college! I'm Emma the secretary for the coming year. I'll be sending your announce mails once a week and keep you up to date on what's happening on Redbrick :) ==Renew & Rejoin== So just a reminder to people to renew your accounts for the coming year - Continuing students membership is €4 and associates/alumni membership is €6. Also don't forget to drop by on Clubs and Socs day to get your FREE goodie bag with amazing stuff inside!!! You can also pay online via the paypal link on the website: http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/help/joining/ ==EGM 2009== On the 14th of October we'll be having our EGM in QG13 at 2.30pm, where we'll be electing our new First Year Rep. So you have to come along to see who he/she's gonna be :) Refreshments will also be provided. ==Freshers Ball== This year we're having our Freshers Ball on 12th of October at 8pm in the Slipper (Matt Weldons, Ballymun Road. There's a map on the homepage > http://redbrick.dcu.ie) . The theme is RED so dig deep in your wardrobes and be creative! There will be drink promotions and €3 drinks. Currently any music requests can be sent to either myself or carri(a)redbrick.dcu.ie for those who have particular songs they love to "boogie on down to"! Remember it's FREE to all members, so even if you're just curious as to how nerdy any of the present members look, you can come on down and have a looksie :) ==Downtime== RedBrick's network will be inaccessible from 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. This is to facilitate an upgrade of one of our switches. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen problems with DCU security, we were unable to do this last weekend when DCU's internet connection was also down. The disruption shouldn't last any longer than one hour. It shouldn't be necessary to reboot any machines, but we recommend that you save any files you've been working on, just in case. Downtime

Hello everyone, As a result of ISS/CSD downtime, RedBrick will be inaccessible from outside DCU on Saturday the 26th (tomorrow) between 6pm and 10pm. There is also a risk of more disruption between 8am and 12pm on Sunday the 27th. This is to upgrade DCU's internet bandwidth to 10 GBPS, much to the envy of practically everyone. We'll be using the opportunity to carry out work in the server room. We are currently working on: upgrading our switch, moving secondary services to deathray, installing new web-chat and web-boards interfaces and fixing the wiki images. Sorry for the disruption. Survey/Downtime/OSS BarCamp

Hi, 1. Survey: Hope everyone is enjoying the last of the summer. We're back to college soon and have been working on a few ideas for the upcoming year. We were hoping to get some feedback from our members so that we can work on things that our membership want. We would appreciate it if you could take the time to fill in a short survey for us. This can be found at www.redbrick.dcu.ie/survey . By responding you're in with the chance to win a mystery prize. You will only be able to open this survey once so please make sure you finish it in one sitting. If you have any questions or suggestions at any point during the year please do not hesitate to contact us. 2. OSS BarCamp: OSS BarCamp is back. This will be held on Saturday 19th September. There will be a series of talks on open source software followed by a barbeque and discounted drinks in Solas. More details can be found in the following link : http://www.ossbarcamp.com/ 3. And now a word from our lovely admins: There will be extended (several hours) downtime on Saturday the 19th of September affecting the following services: Email, NNTP (Boards) and Mailman Mailing lists. This is to facilitate the move from Carbon to our new services machine Morpheus for these services. No other services will be affected by this move. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this upgrade work. Downtime is on the same day as the OSS BarCamp so if you get stuck for things to do you know where to go! 4. RedBrick Collage : If you have any old RedBrick related pictures, posters, plane tickets, *ANYTHING* that you think could help us make a new collage could you please send/email them to us? Intersocs Event - 11/09/09

Hi guys, Just a small quick announcement. As some of you will have seen in #lobby topic and others in the topic of #intersocs; There is an intersocs event in Galway from September 11th-13th 09. This is completely a book-you-own event. As in Redbrick will not be organising accomadation or transport. The group that is heading down from Redbrick is staying in Snoozles Hostel in Galway (http://snoozleshostelgalway.com) just off Eyre Square. There is piles of other hostels and if anyone needs help finding accomadation let me know. Only hostel I would NOT reccommend is Nimmos Hostel. Ver cheap but you get what you pay for in this case. As for buses/trains, the group is aiming to be there by 3pm. Location of drinks is to be decided. If you are attending please reply to this email so that I can get a rough idea of numbers to reserve tables if nescessary and also to see if you would like to travel on the bus with the rest of us (probably playing Mario Kart). Hey guys, So, the year is nearing the end! Exams start soon and all that jazz. ==AGM Results== Firstly this week the committee would like to thank those who attended the AGM, and congradulate next years committee.
