Hello Everyone, The redbrick AGM of 2002 is taking place next tuesday in the Henry Grattan Building. A new committee needs to be elected, and the available positions are as follows: o Chairperson o Secretary o Treasurer o 3 x Systems Admins o PRO o Ents Officer o Webmaster o 3 x Education Officers If you would like to run for a position, please turn up on the night! Under exceptional circumstances we will allow proxy voting, e.g. if you're on INTRA in Shannon or if your pet goldfish of 13 years has just died. If you're one of these unlucky people please contact kamili(a)redbrick.dcu.ie to arrange it. The meeting will take place at 18:30 in CG12, and we would like to invite you to Pravda in the City Centre afterwards in order to meet and greet your new committee. Or get drunk. Microsoft will be giving a talk on MSDN and the .net strategy, as well as the X-Box itself, and finally there will be a chance to play the console after the meeting. Refreshments (sic Alcohol) will be served in the bar afterwards, and all are welcome to attend. Hey everyone, Just a quick reminder, and some further details about tonight's Redbrick Alt Rag Ball. Tickets, for only 4 Euro, are still be available at the Information Booth in the Hub today, so if you haven't got yours yet, hurry up and get it! :) It's going to be one heck of a great night, with the brilliant Damien Rice, Redbrick's own Kid Icarus and some great drink promotions all night. It's taking place in Mono on Wexford St. (If you're going from DCU, the 19A goes directly there from the Ballymun Road entrance) and doors will be open about 9-ish. See you all there! Redbrick Alt Rag Ball

Hey everyone, Just a quick mail to let you know about the Redbrick Alt Rag Ball which will be taking place next Tuesday, 19th February in Mono on Wexford St. Headlining the gig will be the fantastic DAMIEN RICE, who has just released one of the most eagerly awaited Irish albums for years, 'o', to critical acclaim, testament to which was his recent sell-out show at Dublin's Vicar Street. Also being marked on the night, will be the welcome return of Redbrick favourite, KID ICARUS, with an ever-growing Dublin fanbase, and who have packed out venues all over Dublin. There will be some great drinks promotions on the night (3 Euro for V. Ice and bottles of Bud) and every penny we make will be going to charity, so come along! It's going to be a great night! Tickets for this event are a mere 4 Euro and are available from the Information Kiosk in the Hub from tomorrow (Friday). See you all there! Redbrick Christmas Event

Hey everyone, Just a quick mail to let everyone know about this year's Redbrick Christmas event. It's being held in conjunction with FilmSoc and DCUMAC in the rather excellent SoSuMe's on George's St. from 8pm on Thursday, December 13th. There will be scrumptious free food provided on the night and the first 150 people to arrive will get a FREE cocktail. Tickets are a mere £4 and are available from the committee members of the socs/club involved, at FilmSoc's showings, and also watch out for us in the canteen/HUB this week and next. Disk Space

Hi, In case you haven't noticed /home is nearly full, we are desperately short of disk space. Could you please remove any files you no longer need and zip up any files you don't use on a regular basis. To zip a file use gzip gzip -9 myfile This will append a .gz onto the end of the file. To unzip use the gunzip command. gunzip myfile.gz If it's a directory you'll need to use tar. So use this command to zip the directory, tar zcvf mydir To extract it use tar zxvf mydir.tar.gz Remember tar doesn't remove the directory so use rm -r mydir to remove it once you've tar'ed it. UNIX and Solaris tutorial

Hi, Following on from the good turnouts at the HTML tutorials over the last two weeks, Redbrick is holding a UNIX basics tutorial in LG25 of the Computer Applications building tonight at 6pm. We will show you how to do basic unix commands which can be used on redbrick or any other unix system as well as how to setup your Solaris account and to customise it with your own desktop. So that's Redbrick UNIX and Solaris Tutorial LG25 6pm Tonight (Tuesday) This tutorial is open to anyone (including non-School of Computer Applications students) and only very basic knowledge of computers is needed as people will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and go through the tutorial with you. RedBrick's recent downtime

Hi all, On behalf of all of us on committee, I'd like to apologise for RedBrick's recent spate of downtime in the last two weeks. More details about it are on the redbrick.announce newsgroup, (which is the place to look for any up-to-date announcements) but both cases of downtime were caused by unfortunate circumstances. Firstly, RedBrick experienced a severe disk crash, which wiped out our key system disk (with all the programs that essentially make RedBrick work) and which required a few days of flat out admin work for it to be painstakingly restored. The crash occurred during routine maintenance, and the cause of it is still unknown to the sysadmins working on it at the time. Also, RedBrick has been experiencing severe access problems since our physical move to the student centre which has been crippling in terms of maintaining your system. After the crash, the decision was forced to relocate the redbrick machines in the student centre ASAP to prevent future denials of access in times of crises and to have less strings attached when it comes to routine maintenance. This move has proved successful in those terms so far, but unfortunately resulted in in 2 days of downtime due to CSD having problems patching us into our new location. All in all, RedBrick is still a system with a >95% uptime record, and although we still unfortunately experience problems from time to time, often beyond our control (as I'm sure you'll appreciate happened in these circumstances), we are lucky to have a dedicated team of sysaminds and committee members who do their utmost in times of crises. Hi, Redbrick is holding a HTML tutorial next Tuesday the 6th of March in LG25 at 6pm. We will show you how to write a webpage and put it up on the web as well as answering any other questions you may have about redbrick. For first years as well this is a good chance to meet students from other years and to find out more about using redbrick in general.
