[Astronomy Ireland]June Lecture ONLINE now for Members All Around Ireland

Astronomy Ireland's JUNE PUBLIC LECTURE "Aliens, Where Are They?" given by Terry Moseley (IAA) is now available online at Astronomy Ireland's website: http://www.astronomy.ie/ Just click on "Lecture Webcasts" on the sidebar and then click on "June" Note: you can watch 10 other past lectures online also, just click any of the other months! July is the only one that will not work as it has been cleared out in anticipation of our next lecture "My Home-Built Observatory" by Kevin Sweeney an Astronomy Ireland member from Co. Meath who has built a simple yet effective observatory for his 10-inch telescope. Kevin's Lecture to Astronomy Ireland will take place at 8:00pm on Monday July 14th in the main lecture hall of the Henry Grattan Building in Dublin City University (see http://www.astronomy.ie/events.html and see the map of DCU at http://www.astronomy.ie/nextlecture.html) Mark you calendar/diary now! All welcome. APOLOGY: We had some problems with the sound at the start of Terry's lecture (about 7 minutes 15 seconds) in to the webcast that you will see. After 1 minute the sound comes back but there is a bit of crackling but after a while the sound settles down and is perfect until the end. Our apologies to Terry for that and to you, but the vast majority of his very interesting and stimulating talk is audible so please don't let this put you off, especially if you are a member of Astronomy Ireland who lives far from Dublin as this is one of the unique ways we have of reaching out to members all around the country. We hope that everyone will make the effort to come and hear one of Ireland's top amateur astronomers, Mr. Terry Moseley (see biogrpahy below) speak in Dublin: Astronomy Ireland is bringing Terry Moseley all the way from Co. Antrim to give the A.I. June Public Lecture in D.C.U. on Monday June 9 so we are hoping all of you reading this will make the effort to attend. JUNE PUBLIC LECTURE: "ALIENS, WHERE ARE THEY?" is an update on the Fermi Paradox. In the 1950s and 60s while working on the development of nuclear bombs, the world renowned physicist Enrico Fermi worked out how likely we were to be visited by aliens given our best ideas of how we think life got started and how often that should happen in the universe as it was known then. He concluded there should be many advanced civilisations in contact with us now. The fact that they are not gave rise to the Fermi Paradox. Terry Moseley will look at this problem using the latest knowledge about life and the universe to update the Fermi Paradox. It promises to be a fascinating evening of discovery and all are welcome so please bring a friend. OUR SPEAKER: Terry Moseley is the President of the Irish Astronomical Association. He will travel from Co. Antrim to Dublin to give this talk. Terry is well known and respected in the astronomical community not only in Ireland but abroad. He knows Patrick Moore since his time as Director of the Planetarium at Armagh in the late 1960s. Earlier this year the International Astronomical Union (IAU) honoured him naming minor planet 16693 named after him (See http://star.arm.ac.uk/press/TerryMoseley-Asteroid.html for details). The lecture is open to everyone and will take place in Ballymun Public Library at 6:30pm pon Wednesday June 11th. No admission charge. Emmet Mordaunt will examine the truth behind astrology - the art of judging reputed occult influence of stars, planets, etc. on human affairs. P.S.
