Evening Classes 2010 Events DVDs Shop 1. 'Living With A Star' Lecture Report And DVD On Monday, February 8, Dr. Chris Davis of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) gave a fascinating talk to lecture guests in Trinity College entitled 'Living with a Star'. In his talk, Dr. Davis discussed the violent eruptions from the surface of the Sun which can eject vast clouds into space. Known as space weather, he explained to guests how these clouds or storms can wreak havoc on satellites and ground-based communications systems when they reach Earth, as well as being extremely dangerous to astronauts. Chris detailed several missions, such as the NASA STEREO spacecraft, which provide vital clues in understanding space weather, while also allowing us to forecast and track this phenomenon. Dr. Davis, an enthusiastic spokesman for his science, gave an excellent talk and at the end treated guests to a 3D journey around our closest star, the Sun. Evening Classes 2010 Events DVDs Shop 1. Endeavour Lands Safely The Space Shuttle Endeavour made a rare night time landing at Kennedy Space Centre on Monday, February 21, at 10:20pm EST. The Shuttle and six-member crew were returning from a two week mission to the International Space Station (ISS) where a new node called 'Tranquility' was installed. Following the completion of 'Tranquility' the Space Station is now 90percent complete. Mission STS-130 marks the 33rd trip dedicated to the assembly, maintenance and improvement of the International Space Station, and is one of the last 5 flights of the shuttle programme which is due to be decommissioned in September. Astronomy Tips This Week a.. Tonight, just a few minutes after sunset, a very thin crescent Moon will be visible in the West. Just below it, and close to the horizon, you might just be able to make out the planets Venus and Jupiter. They are located right beside each other. NOTE: This conjunction may be difficult to see due to the Sun's glare, please do not try to find these planets with binoculars or a telescope, as sunlight is extremely dangerous when focused onto the eye, and can cause permanent blindness b.. A strong stream of particles from the Sun reached Earth last night, and aurora (also known as Northern Lights) were spotted from Northern Ireland. Did you see them? Allan Chapman Lecture Report & DVD On Monday, January 25, Astronomy Ireland's New Year Lecture was presented by none other than Professor Allan Chapman of Oxford University. We were very honoured, and extremely lucky to have secured such a high-profile speaker for our New Year Lecture which officially launched Astronomy Ireland's 20th anniversary celebrations. Professor Chapman did not disappoint as he captivated guests for nearly 90 minutes with his boisterous account of the history of the telescope, from Galileo's time right up to the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits Earth today. With his unique presentation style, theatrical gestures and clever wit, Professor Chapman had guests on the edge of their seats throughout his talk. Hanging on his every word, a packed theatre of over 200 guests listened as he moved through the centuries, detailing the evolution of the telescope and the now famous people involved in its development. Professor Chapman ended his lecture with a series of photographs and illustrations of the telescope throughout the centuries. After the lecture, there was a social reception in The Lombard, where guests packed in and had the opportunity to meet and take photos with Professor Chapman as well as mingle with Astronomy Ireland staff, volunteers and members alike. Space Shuttle Endeavour Blasts Off The Shuttle Endeavour was launched into space from the Kennedy Space Centre at 4.14am local time on Monday, February 8 and is now currently docked with the International Space Station (ISS). Endeavour, with a crew of 6, is on a 13-day mission to add a new node, called 'Tranquility' to the space station. Described as a very complicated mission, Tranquility will provide more room for the space station's life support and environmental systems, including oxygen generation and water recycling. ** *Location of Fireball Announced* *Astronomy Ireland Experts Kick Off 'Big Search' for Wednesday's Huge Fireball* Tonight, in Dublin, at Astronomy Ireland's Monthly Public Lecture the first hint of the hugely anticipated location of last Wednesday's sensational fireball was announced. Experts at Astronomy Ireland have predicted that the fireball, which likely derived from leftover debris which floats around in space, landed* *somewhere in County Donegal. Further reports will refine the exact location of the landing, and Astronomy Ireland are urging the general public to continue to submit 'Fireball Reports' via the Astronomy Ireland website - www.astronomy.ie. hello there....... My name is Mike Joyce .. .i live in sligo...and yesterday I noticed the meteor which passed over Sligo at approx 6.10pm ? I didnt check the time when i saw it...but it was around this time....... i would estimate that the meteor was flying in nthe trajectory of the black arrow on the attached jpg file...approx north north east or slightly north of north east.. when i noticed it it was approximately level with the car park in connaughton road....and about 10-15 seconds later it had moved approx another 1000 to 1200 meters.... (and its volume seemed to have reduced at this stage by 60-70% in size) it is hard to say exactly how high the meteor was flying ???? maybe 1200-1500 meters..... i hope this information is of use to you.... regards, Mike

Change Of Seasons On Mars People with large telescopes will see something strange happening on Mars over the next few weeks. The northern hemisphere of the Red Planet is going into its summertime, and as a result, the warmer climate is causing the frozen carbon dioxide in the ice cap to melt, turning back into gas. As the cap recedes, vast dark sand dunes are revealed, and through a telescope these look like a dark 'collar' around the white pole.
