Hundreds of people so far have sent in reports and photographs of last night's eclipse of the Moon, which was seen by people all over Ireland just after sunset! Astronomy Ireland wants more! Send your reports and photographs today to observe(a)astronomy.ie so that we can include them in an upcoming issue of Astronomy Ireland magazine. We will also show the latest photos at next Monday's Public Lecture in Trinity College Dublin (see below). Under yesterday evening's clear skies, people took out cameras of all kinds - everything from mobile phones and digital cameras right up to high-end SLRs - to take photos of the Moon. We've put up some of the photos we've received so far, which you can view on our website HERE. Kids and grown-ups alike sent in reports after witnessing this celestial event, showing that astronomy is a fun and easy hobby to enjoy for people of all ages. Remember to watch out for your photos in Astronomy Ireland magazine as well as on our website, and please keep sending us your eclipse viewing reports! 2. Public Lecture: The GLORIA Project GLORIA will be the first free and open-access network of telescopes around the world, that can be used anybody with an interest in astronomy, not just professional astronomers! As the network of robotic telescopes will collect vast amounts of data, astronomers will not have time to go through it all. However, the community of people using the telescopes will allow for thousands of people to analyse data and help solve problems in astronomy. Professor Lorraine Hanlon from the UCD Department of Physics will deliver Astronomy Ireland's Public Lecture on April 29th. She will tell guests at the lecture all about how the GLORIA network of robotic telescopes will work and how people can get involved in using the high-tech equipment. Spring Sale Membership DVD Shop 1. Eclipse This Thursday Just before 9pm this coming Thursday, as the Sun sets and the Full Moon rises, a Partial Eclipse of the Moon will be visible from Ireland. Only a tiny part of the Moon will dip into the Earth's shadow this time around but you should see a small 'bite' taken out of the Moon's lower right edge as it rises in the East. The sky will be bright as this eclipse happens very close to sunset but as the minutes pass the Moon will get a little higher and the sky will get a little darker. The eclipse can be seen with the naked eye but binoculars or small telescopes will give even better views. And we want you to email us at observe(a)astronomy.ie and tell us what you see for a report that will go into our magazine for posterity. The Moon rising lends itself to fantastic photo opportunities as you can line the Moon up with interesting objects on the Earth, buildings, church spires, landscapes and the like. Well, the latest trend is to use robotic telescopes that can be controlled from anywhere in the world by everyday people, and Irish scientists are at the forefront of these new advancements! In a major public lecture for Astronomy Ireland, Irish professor Lorraine Hanlon will talk about this telescope network known as GLORIA: GLObal Robotic-telescopes Intelligent Array. GLORIA will be the first free and open-access network of robotics telescopes around the world, that can be used anybody with an interest in astronomy, not just professional astronomers! As the network of robotic telescopes collects vast amounts of data, the community of users will become "citizen scientists" and play a major role in analysing images from deep space. The International Space Station Visible Over Ireland Lots of people have spotted the International Space Station and sent in reports of their sightings. You can get daily prediction on our website HERE of when to see biggest and most expensive spacecraft ever over Ireland. Viewing the ISS is an unforgettable sight, and if you haven't seen it yet, you will be amazed at how brightly it glows in the evening sky as it blazes through the heavens! Commander Chris Hadfield, currently on board the giant space station, made headlines recently when he tweeted a photo of Dublin along with the first Irish phrase sent from space: "Tá Éire fíoralainn!" The Canadian astronaut has a special link to Ireland as his daughter lives in Ireland. The comet will be visible all night, but you can use the galaxy as a signpost, and you will see that PANSTARRS is even brighter than the famous galaxy!
