To: dcudrama(a)gmail.com Hi Folks *warning: long email alert* Welcome back to second semester. I hope you were all reasonably happy with the exam results. I know that up until now you have all been very busy with various projects but there are a few things that I would like to bring to the committee for discussion. Before I do I would like to say well done so far with all your work in Semester One. Drama has been very visual on campus and compared to some societies and other "organised events on campus" your events have been very successful. The talent this year is very high and I'm very glad to see so many new faces. There are a couple of things though that I would like the committee to look into if you're not already doing so…. 1: No workshops for the general membership have taken place since everyone joined on clubs and socs day. Saying that a workshop in on and it's mainly for a particular cast but telling everyone else they can tag along is not exactly inviting. 2: Drama's president, Marie Louise O Donnell, who is now an examiner in the school of communications, wants to meet with the committee to discuss a project she would like drama to help her out with. She wants to start up a particular performance art form which has never been preformed in this country before and she would like the committee to give her support with it by being open and positive about the idea. She does not want funding, just for the committee to facilitate some workshops that she would like to give. I have volunteered my services to get this up and running but will need some help along the way namely a General Members Meeting sometime soon. 3: Where are the theatre trips? There have been none for the membership this year and musicals in Broadway don't count. There is a huge active membership who can organise simple trips and god knows there are enough of you on committee. 4: Events for the second semester that's not the Musical??? Ok, so there are shows that were auditioned for and rehearsed for that are being preformed early this semester but what is there for the membership to actually do if they have no interest in Musicals? If would be really nice if there could be a general members meeting to tell everyone the great stuff that's going on! I know that I have brought most of these points up with most of the committee on an individual basis but nothings being done about it so far and it's a bit frustrating. I know most of you are busy with some project or another but the vibes been given out aren't good. Committee members are most visual at the run up to an event when you're all running around like blue arsed flies and stressed out. You have to remember that you need to be approachable to the membership and angry, stressed people aren't approachable. You join a society in college not only to put your talents to good use but to try something new and to meet people who won't ridicule you for taking a stab at something you've never done before and you join so that you can learn new skills. I would like the committee to call a general members meeting so that the new members can meet the committee and also so that anyone who may not have taken part in first semester can feel like they still have the chance to take part, new semester, new productions. In addition to this I would like to propose weekly membership meetings starting up on Monday nights at 6pm(just before the committee meeting) so that members can get together and hash out ideas and feel like they have a bigger input into the society. Ideally, should this idea take off then this could be a big resource for the committee. This could be the opportunity some people are looking for to help out, especially if they are new to the campus, somewhere people can go for an hour or so to hang out with people they have common interest with and even to show up without knowing anyone and maybe make a few friends. Anyway, I realise I'm rambling a bit but not being on committee this year I am seeing things from a very new perspective. So much goes through committee that every year the committee gets saturated with work load. Its unfair to ask committee members not to participate in productions and to concentrate on their committee roles solely and one of the only ways forward for Drama is to see the members take a more active role in day to day running of the society and the society activity which drama is missing this year. Without workshops, theatre trips and weekly brain storming sessions drama is not catering for its members who don't get parts in shows or who don't want to perform on the stage. With 100 active members and 200 non active that leave 2/3 of the society not wanting to audition. I think it can only be healthy to have a more involved membership but in the long run it may even be necessary to see the number of people on Drama Committee extended. Adding more positions to the committee would mean an amendment to the constitution at the next AGM before the elections. Should the committee feel this is necessary I think that there is a need to have a brain storming session with some of the alumni members to discuss maybe a 5 year plan for drama and to let them help move drama that step forward its been missing for the past few years. On a side note….I'm sure your rep will tell you this but the SPC has some money this year that it can afford to spend on once off capital expenditures so hurry your asses up and get a quote in for a new set! [Drama-Committee] Paint, Marie-Louise & other matters...

Hi Committee! Grab a cuppa and READ TO THE END. There are a few things that have popped up this week since the meeting that we need to look into... PAINT: Right, as by now most of you should be aware, the SU is not happy with the state of the floor of the Venue, after the painting of the set for All My Sons. They've gone off and found a quote for 500 euro for cleaning, which strikes me as just a touch too much. Eoghan has proposed that he clean the floor on Tuesday next upon his return from for'n parts, for a measly 20 bucks. I like this plan. With that in mind, the first proposal that I have for the committee is that Eoin O Callaghan (being the secretary) write to the lovely Sarah Farrell and extend our offer to clean the Venue ourselves, at a drastically reduced rate. Explain that we would rather clean up our own mess than have an outside company do it and be charged. MARIE-LOUISE: Marie-Louise O Donnell, our erstwhile president (as some of you may know) has left her position in the Helix and has returned to DCU to lecture. She also has a grand vision and and a plan to put on a vocal chorus-type show that was written by a student some years ago. The student in question was a paraplegic and spent several years writing this piece (his thesis) one letter at a time. It is an intriguing proposal, and will require a chorus of about 50 and at least a year to prepare. Marie-Louise is foaming at the mouth at the prospect of organising this and has collared me on several occasions to wax lyrical about this project. I think it has the potential to be an absolutely unique production and is the sort of thing that could catapult DCU Drama into the realms of national exposure, which is never a bad thing... Marie-Louise wants to get cracking on this as soon as possible. Because of our heavy involvement with Merchant and the upcoming musical, we may be stretched a little thin if we attempt to tackle this whale of a project. Marie-Louise has been speaking to Elaine Bannon about the project quite a bit, and has always had a good rapport with her. Elaine herself has offered to drive the bus for us on this one, as she realises that we're a bit swamped. Because of these factors, the second proposal that I have this evening is: That we contact Elaine and ask her (officially) to be the liaison with Marie-Louise for this production. It is intruiging and we shouldn't let it get past us. DANIEL BEVAN & TAPE: The Bevster texted me yesterday wanting to know what the story was with getting the Helix and all manner of other stuff related to his play, "Tape." If Dave, Eoin and Shane are available, I'd like to arrange a meeting tomorrow at lunchtime, perhaps about 4pm (when I can give about 15 mins before running off to work). We need to sit down with Bev and basically determine what he wants/needs and what we can realistically give him. Budgetwise, Setwise etc. One of our missions is to produce shows that members come to us with and this is no exception. It needs to be made clear to Bev that no, we will not build him a Motel room in the Space - it's pointless. The importance of sticking to a budget is also paramount. And the cast of his show have to be DCU Drama members AND DCU students, for insurance purposes. The show will need a production team also. Eoin, Dave, Shane? Available at 4pm Friday? Lemme know. Let's not let this drag on forever. ST. MICHAEL'S HOUSE: We loved it last year, so did they. If we're gonna do it this year, we do it right. We need a producer and a team. Volunteers? We've got about 7 weeks. THE MUSICAL: ...has been cast and 4 committee members are principals in the show. Well done to all, but let's not let what happened last year happen again this year (i.e. Drama screeching to a halt because the entire committee were in the musical). We've got lots of other projects on the boil, let's not forget that. Alan Kinsella is already making noises about moving it to week 9 and this is a cataclysmically bad idea because: we already have the Venue booked for week 8 AND week 9 clashes with the Clubs & Socs Awards. Remember last year? Style Soc have informed our producers that several of their models have been cast and will be needed for fashion show rehearsals AND several cast members are in Merchant and the ISDA-bound "All My Sons." ISDA is the weekend before the musical opens. Great. The producers want to call a cast meeting early next week to basically remind the cast of their committment to the show. It's on in 5 and a half weeks. THAT BLOODY ROOM IN ALBERT COLLEGE AND OUR SET: Martin Conry is officially harder to find than the soap in the bathtub. There exists a room in Albert College for our use, but only 'til the end of the year. We also have to move the set from its present location. I reckon if we move the contents of the SPC equipment room to Albert College (as the set itself will never get up the stairs over there), we'll be able to fit the set into the SPC room. When I informed the SPC chair of this, he was crestfallen. But I made it clear that it was pointless trying to get the set up the narrow stairwells in Albert College. So tough. Essentially, DCU Drama need our own room, somewhere close to the Venue. Aaargh. We need to sort out volunteers for a big Saturday moving job sometime soon. NURSING PROGRAM: Mary McGrath, head of the Nursing Faculty, contacted us over Christmas and asked if DCU Drama could help out with their training, providing actors who could simulate symptoms. This would put Drama in the enviable position of contributing to the academic merit of a course in DCU. They'll need some people around April/May and I think we should jump at it. What say you guys? BUI BOLG / ST. PATRICK'S DAY: Our Wexford-based puppet friends need about 115 (yes, 115) volunteers for paid work for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Bui Bolg are headlining the parade, and DCU Drama hava a chance to be part of that. Eoin is working on the details as we speak. I'm sure there's more, but you're probably all bored by now. On the day in question, I spoke with the Drama Committee and they were happy that their posters were only being moved to the side. I have no reason to believe that now they have changed their mind. As regards the Henry Grattan notice board, I can assure you that no member of the events team or union exec took down any drama posters. As you know, posters are always being taken down by students - especially the nice ones! What probably happened then is that an events crew member was putting up posters all over campus and saw a space on the drama board. Unless they are a society member, they would not have known that that board is specifically for drama as there is no sign. I also wanted to ask the committee what the situation is with the paint that was spilled on the floor of the venue. The Students' Union has received a quote for the repairs and it will cost €500. As tech officer for drama, could you find out when this drama will be able to pay this? As we need to get it cleaned as soon as possible.
