Hello all,
Apologies for the later than usual announce email, things were thrown a
little out of sync by the LAN. Speaking of which, it was a success! A
thank you to all those who showed up and participated.
There isn't much going on this week, spending most of the time trying to
reset sleep cycles to reasonable hours.

Hello,
We are holding a 24 hour BYOPC (bring your own PC) LAN this weekend,
Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd from 12pm Saturday until 12pm
Sunday. To sign up, all you need to do is register on
http://www.byopc.dcu.ie/
and bring a €10 entry fee on the day (as well as your computer).
The event will be held in the Helix in "the space" and entrance will be
via the side door (the place inbetween the Henry Grattan and the Helix
itself).
Tournament-wise we will be running 3 main competitions: an RTS (Dawn of
War II), a one v one FPS (Unreal Tournament) and a team based FPS
(Counter-Strike: Source). Prizes to be won for each of them, so be sure
to get a game or two in for practice beforehand!
Also, we will need you to bring your own power extension cords and cat5
cable (although we'll probably have quite a bit of spare cat5 cable, so
you don't need to worry about that if you don't have any spare).
Hope to see you there,
Seamus
(Note: I did send a mail saying that there would probably be a LAN
around this time* so don't be hatin' ;_;)

Hello!
Sorry about sending two emails in such quick succession, however there
is a reason! We're going to make an order for a batch of hoodies next
Monday. Each hoodie will cost €35 and they are available in any colour
or size and you can also choose between a regular or zipped style.
In case you've never seen one before (where have you been?) here's what
the regular navy one looks like:
http://gallery.redbrick.dcu.ie/d/159629-2/gamessochoody.jpg
So if you want one to buy one of our fabulous hoodies, you will need to
find a committee member either around campus or at one of our events and
give them a €10 deposit, your name, student number, email and most
importantly your order.
We are also looking for people who would like to get involved in making
a game for charity this year. You don't have to be a programming whiz to
become involved, any aspect at all that might interest you would be
useful - be it design, story creation/development or event music and
voice acting! So if any of that appeals to you and you would like to
take part, just send an email to us at games(a)redbrick.dcu.ie or turn up
at one of our Game Programming tutorials from 5-6pm on Tuesdays.
Thanks again for your time.
Have a good week!

http://games.dcu.ie
Oh hello again,
Welcome to Zombie Week! We have a whole host of events scheduled to fit
in with the theme of Halloween this week, and here they are:
-Cinema Trip
-Airsoft Zombie Shoot
-Zombies vs Humans
-Left 4 Dead Tournament
-Weekly Events
-Cinema Trip-
This Monday (that's tomorrow) we're getting together with Film Soc to go see Zombieland in
the Omniplex in Santry. We're meeting up at the Hub at 6:45pm and then
heading out at 7:00pm. Tickets are at a reduced cost of €3. Those of you
who have emailed us have your places secured, but I'm sure there are
still spots left for those of you who want to just turn up on the day.
-Airsoft Zombie Shoot-
On Tuesday and Thursday we are also teaming up with Airsoft Soc to go on
a zombie shoot in an abandoned warehouse. Places for this are
unfortunately already full and this is just to inform those who have
already paid. We are meeting outside the Helix at 6:30pm both days where
a bus will take us to the warehouse. If you have signed up and have not
paid, please do so as soon as possible.
-Zombies vs Humans-
We're teaming up with Airsoft again on Wednesday afternoon for another
zombie shoot-out. This time on DCU's campus in Albert College Park. There
is a meeting organised for Tuesday at 5pm in the Hub for all those wishing
to take part where we will explain the rules of the game - this meeting
is mandatory if you want to play. The actual event itself will take
place Wednesday at 1:30pm outside the venue. Everybody will be given
their roles then and there.
Here's a video of it being played by members of a college in America to
give you a rough idea of what to expect:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxsegSE2mrg
-Left 4 Dead Tournament-
In keeping with the theme, we will be holding a Left 4 Dead tournament
this week at Lab Gaming from 6pm. Signups will take place on the day and
entry will be €4. So if you think you're up the challenge of fighting off
the zombie hoarde, be sure to come along! There will be a mystery prize
for the lucky winners. We are also holding regular Lab Gaming too for
those of you who aren't entering.
-Regular Events-
That's right, all our usual events are still going strong. I won't bore
you too much with the details.
Traditional Gaming:
Actually I sort of lied. This Monday there will be no Traditional Gaming
on account of it being a bank holiday. However there will be the cinema
trip I previously mentioned.
It will be on Wednesday however in the Glass Room upstairs in the Hub,
near the equipment room.
Game Programming:
This is on in L101 from 5-6pm teaching you how to write your own games
using a hands-on approach. Everyone is encouraged to attend, guest
logins for non-computing students are provided.
Console Gaming:
The usual console fun continues in the Old Bar in the Hub this Wednesday
from 2pm. So be sure to come along and get your fill of Rock Band, Halo,
Brawl and your other favourite games as well as the free refreshments!
Lab Gaming:
As I mentioned, Lab Gaming will still be on as usual in C204 in the
Henry Grattan building from 6pm. Be sure to arrive early as places tend
to fill up quickly, especially during tournament nights.
That's everything event-wise this week. Be sure to also attend all the
other Zombie Week events being held by the other societies involved -
Airsoft, Style, Art, Model UN, Book, Drama and Strange Things.
On a side note a 4th year PE and Biology student is doing her final year
project and requires 3 females between the ages of 18 and 24 woh play
games for 10 or more hours a week to test whether or not playing video
games has an effect on hand-eye co-ordination. Anyone suitable can email
hazel.ward2(a)gmail.com
Alright, thanks folks. Have a good week.
Any comments, suggestions, complaints or death threats to
games(a)redbrick.dcu.ie
Cheers,

DCU Games Society - Best Society 08/09
http://games.dcu.ie
Oh hello,
This week we have quite a lot in store, so without further adieu, here's a
nice bulletpoint list:
-Brawl Tournament
-Gaelcon
-Cinema Trip
-Hoodies
-Regular Events
-Brawl Tournament-
This Wednesday at 2pm in the old bar, GamesSoc hosts our very first tournament of the
year: Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Signups will take place on the day, so
be sure to arrive on time or else you might miss out on the chance to
win one of our fabulous prizes! Entry fee is only €2, so even if you've
never played before it's worth signing up anyway.
-Gaelcon-
This weekend is also the 21st annual Gaelcon. What is Gaelcon you might
ask? Well:
Gaelcon is a gathering of gamers, who all come together in a certain
place at a certain time for the same reason; to play games and have fun.
This is a tradition, which has been on going for the last 20 years. Each
October bank holiday weekend for 3 days the convention opens to provide
a place were dice are rolled, cards are played, imaginations run riot,
old friendships are renewed and new ones forged. Gaelcon welcomes anyone
who wants to come and play and there is a large range of games from
scheduled events to casual pick up and play games running all weekend.
Blurb shamelessly stolen from their website. (http://www.gaelcon.com/)
So if you're a member of our fine Games Society and you will be attending
Gaelcon and would like the price of your ticket refunded to you then
send us an e-mail at games(a)redbrick.dcu.ie
-Cinema Trip-
If you've already read the allsoc e-mail then you'll already know about
this:
We're also planning a cinema trip during Halloween week (week 5) to see
Zombieland with the Film Society to fit the theme of the week. So if
you're interested send a mail to us at games(a)redbrick.dcu.ie and we'll reserve
a place for you.
-Hoodies-
So you think you need to join style soc to be all trendy? Well, you do(*).
But we are making another order for a batch of hoodies that you have
seen some of our older members wearing. We're just gauging interest at
this point, but the hoodies will most likely be available in a variety
of colours and be in the price range of €30-40. So once again that
e-mail address is games(a)redbrick.dcu.ie :)
-Regular Events-
All our regular events are ongoing as usual:
Traditional Gaming:
This week traditional gaming will still be on from 6pm on Monday and
Wednesday in CG19, so be sure to come along and get your fill of
board/card/war/rpg gaming.
Game Programming:
If you missed last weeks tutorial, fret not, as it was only the first of
many. So be sure to come along this Tuesday from 5-6pm in L101 (that's
the computing building) where our webmaster Tom will be teaching you all
the basics you'll need to program your own games. Non-computing students
can also come along as guest log-ins will be provided.
Blinky Night:
Every Tuesday we also hold Blinky night, which means we all get together
online on our gaming server for an evening of fun. We usually start
somewhere between 7-8pm. More information about Blinky can be found
here: http://games.dcu.ie/forums/index.php?board=12.0
You can also join our steam community here:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/gamessoc
Console Gaming:
Console gaming is continuing on as per usual despite the tournament, so
if you're not too interested in playing Brawl then you can just rock out
with Rock Band, play a few games of Halo or any of our other games.
Lab Gaming:
Last weeks lab gaming was a huge success with the lab at almost maximum
capacity. So if you want a spot this week but sure to arrive on time. It
starts from 6pm in Henry Grattan building, room C204 (that's the top
floor) for a night of fun.
Phew. I think that's everything.
As usual, if you have any suggestions, questions or complaints feel free
to e-mail us (I think I mentioned the address once or twice already)
Thanks,
Seamus
