Mars Close To Moon - Telescope Watches Nationwide This Friday, January 29, the brilliant 'star' blazing just to the left of the Moon will of course be the planet Mars, which is now closer to Earth than it will be for a 6 year period. At carefully chosen venues all across the country, Astronomy Ireland will be setting up powerful telescopes in what is hoped to be the biggest ever telescope spectacular in the history of the state. We encourage everyone to tell everyone you know about Mars Watch and to come along this Friday with friends and family. Please note that the all Watches will go ahead regardless of weather. World Famous Professor Coming to Dublin Join us to kick off Astronomy Ireland's 20th Birthday Celebrations BOOK TICKETS ORDER DVD This Monday, January 25, our 20th Anniversary Public Lecture - '400 Years of the Telescope' - will be given by none other than Professor Allan Chapman of Oxford University. The lecture is our first big event of 2010 and will be a platform for us to launch the celebrations for our 20th year, which will take place over the coming 12 months. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to host this lecture delivered by Professor Chapman, a world famous speaker who is held in the highest regard by those involved in the field of Astronomy, from amateurs to academics alike. Strange Asteroid Flyby This Week A curious object is going to pass within about 80,000 miles of the Earth, that's only one-third the distance to the Moon, visible from 7pm tonight, January 12, to 4am tomorrow morning. Catalogued as a 10m-class asteroid, 2010 AL30 has an orbital period of almost exactly 1 year. There is some mystery surrounding the object as it is difficult to classify whether it is manmade or natural in origin. The object will pass through Orion, Taurus, and Pisces and experienced amateur astronomers are encouraged to monitor the flyby. There is more information available HERE and HERE. The cold weather can cause optical phenomena when there is some haze in the upper atmosphere. Look out for sun dogs, appearing as 'blobs' of light in the sky. b.. Jupiter is getting lower in the evening skies, but still worth seeing through binoculars or a telescope after sunset. c.. Mars is rising earlier and earlier, and can be seen in the Eastern sky as a bright orangey-red 'star'. Telescopes available in our Shop will allow you to see Jupiter's moons and even the canyons and ice caps on Mars! 2010 Events DVDs Shop 1. Astronomy Ireland's 20th Anniversary This is our first email of 2010 and we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. As many of you know, this is Astronomy Ireland's 20th Anniversary and we will be celebrating in style over the course of the year with an impressive list of events already lined up. Although our official birthday isn't until August 1, the date the society was founded in 1990, we will be kicking off our celebrations in style with international speakers such as Allan Chapman who will deliver our New Year Lecture on January 25. In our 20th year we are proud to say that we are expanding, hiring more staff, planning our next set of Evening classes and educating children all around the country with our successful Outreach Programme, as well as a range of other events and activities. Not only this, we are fast approaching our 12,000th member, a big milestone in our growth to date. If you are not yet a member then this is the perfect year to become part of Astronomy Ireland, an ever-growing organisation, and the most popular astronomy club in the world. New Year's Eve Eclipse Report Last Thursday, December 31, Ireland had the privilege of welcoming the New Year to the sight of an extremely impressive partial Lunar eclipse as the Earth cast a shadow deep into space and onto the Moon. This eclipse, the first to be seen on New Year's Eve since 1656, was at its deepest at 7.22pm when a portion of the Moon became invisible in the Earth's shadow and was seen by millions all over Ireland. This lunar event not only marked the end of a very successful United Nations International Year of Astronomy (IYA) but the beginning of Astronomy Ireland's 20th year.
