This prompts me to ask: Should Ireland have a TV Astronomy Show? Vote now: YES: reply to this email if you think we should! NO: do not reply and we will take it that there should not be an Irish TV astronomy show! Will you tune in live at 11am every second Thursday, or record it that day, or watch it online at www.astronomy.ie/tv ? Even more importantly we need to hear your thoughts and comments on the first show after you have seen it: Is it any good? Is it worth doing? What should be covered? Another Irish Discovery - New 'Demon Star' October is proving to be an amazing month for Irish amateur astronomy with the announcement yesterday of another Irish discovery. Former member of Astronomy Ireland Dave McDonald had been observing an asteroid when he noticed that in his images a nearby star appeared to change in brightness from picture to picture. After consulting with colleagues, it was quickly determined that McDonald had discovered that the dip in brightness is caused by the newly discovered orbiting star passing in front of its brighter companion star. Dave McDonald - a health and safety consultant by day and a science ambassador for <http://www.scienceweek.ie/index.asp> 'Discover Science & Engineering' - found it hard to contain his excitement but he is keen that recent astronomical discoveries are most useful if they generate more public awareness in astronomy and science. "Ireland's future depends on attracting investment into the country," McDonald stated. "To do that we must ensure we continue to deliver suitably qualified individuals. Discoveries like this generate interest in astronomy and therefore may encourage young people to consider a scientific discipline as a career" Dave received confirmation earlier this week that this variable has now been given the formal designation 000-BJX-116. Dave McDonald hit the headlines in 2008 when he became the first Irish astronomer to discover a new asteroid in 160 years. Uranus appears as a dim star like object just above Jupiter, barely visible to the naked eye, it is an easy sight through binoculars or telescope. Science Week Lecture - Cosmic Clocks and Little Green Men In the autumn of 1967, a PhD student from Northern Ireland called Jocelyn Bell was listening to radio waves from deep space. Among the noise something stood out: a highly-regular series of clicks. This continuous beat echoed through space and arrived at Earth, and nothing like it had ever been heard before. In fact, it was believed that the noise was created by an extraterrestrial beacon built by an intelligent civilisation, and thus the phrase "little green men" was born. Over 40 years later, many more of these objects have been discovered, and although we now know that the source of these clicks are exotic dead stars called pulsars, we still do not know how they work. On November 8th, Dr Andy Shearer of NUI Galway will give Astronomy Ireland's public lecture, where he will investigate these strange objects and how they are formed. Pulsars are the small remnants of a dead star, crushed into a volume as large as a city. A spoonful of "pulsar-material" would weigh as much as a house! These objects rotate rapidly, shooting out beams of radio waves, like a lighthouse. Some of these beams cross Earth, and astronomers are afforded an opportunity to investigate some of the strangest objects in the Universe. The "beats" caused by the beams from the pulsars are so regular that they are the most accurate clocks in the Universe. Such precision allows scientists to investigate some of Einstein's theories, including time-warping and relativity. The lecture takes place at 8pm in the Fitzgerald Building, Trinity College Dublin. When the star runs out of nuclear fuel, it can't hold itself together, and it explodes and flares often brighter than entire galaxies! The vast majority of elements in the Universe are created by supernova events. Therefore, the carbon we are made of and the oxygen and nitrogen we breathe were all created by a massive explosion in space billions of years ago! The supernova was discovered using a Celestron C14 telescope that Grennan bought from the Astronomy Ireland Shop, which he has housed in a personal observatory in North Dublin. Supernova Celebration and Public Lecture Grennan will give a special speech next Monday, October 11th, in Trinity College Dublin after our public lecture "The Hunt for Alien Life". Exploding Star Discovered from Ireland Amateur astronomer and former vice chairman of Astronomy Ireland, David Grennan has discovered the first Irish supernova from his observatory in Raheny, North Dublin. Although Grennan's discovery was made during a search undertaken on September 17th , it is required that a detailed confirmation must follow before being officially announced. Prof. Smartt and his team at Queen's University Belfast analysed the light coming from the explosion and concluded that this event shows peculiarities which mean this discovery may be of great interest to the scientific community. This is the first time such a discovery has been made from Ireland. Supernovae represent the cataclysmic failure of a star. Such explosions are unimaginably violent and not only represent the end of life for the Star but also a catastrophic end for any planets which may orbit this star. The consequences for any beings living on a planet where the parent star explodes are naturally pretty dire. Grennan describes his feelings following the find, "Naturally I'm very excited at having made this discovery, especially since it's a first for Ireland. I find myself wondering if there were some poor souls living on planets surrounding the star when it exploded. One thing is for sure, we'll never know. The apparent unusual nature of this event makes it doubly exciting. It will be weeks and months before we know exactly what the true nature of this object is. Because of the vast distances involved this explosion took place over 290 million years ago, long before even the first dinosaurs walked the earth."
