Irish Planets around other Stars Astronomy Ireland's Autumn Public Lecture will be given next Monday, Sept 14, by Dr. Chris Watson of the Astrophysics Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast, and made available on DVD for everyone in Ireland. Dr. Watson will give a special talk about extrasolar bodies - planets that orbit other stars - and Ireland's involvement in the detection, follow-up research and characterisation of these exoplanets. This is a subject that is fast becoming the most exciting and rapidly developing area of astronomy. The lecture takes place at 8pm on Monday, September 14, in the Fitzgerald Building, Trinity College Dublin and a DVD is available for anyone who can't make it. For more information click HERE. After the Lecture, we invite all of you to join us in The Lombard at 9:30pm for a social reception where we will have an opportunity to socialise with Dr. Watson and one another. Book seats HERE. Order DVD HERE. 3. ISS and "Space Chase" The International Space Station (ISS) will be visible in Irish evening skies again from September 9th to 22nd. Not only that, observers will be treated to a "space chase" on Wednesday night, September 9, as the shuttle Discovery undocks from the space station and begins its homeward journey. For times to watch this event, you can get predictions on the internet, but to receive daily predictions to your mobile phone of the times ISS and the shuttle will pass over, text SPACE to 57003. Each text received costs 1euro and proceeds help us to promote interest in astronomy. See our ISS page at www.astronomy.ie/ISS. 4. Fireball Investigations continue into the fireball seen over Ireland last Thursday, Sept 3 just after 9pm. Although we have received over 100 reports to date, in 1999 when predicting the course of a meteorite subsequently found in Carlow, we received over 400 reports which helped us achieve this. We are urging you report your sighting to us by filling out a Fireball Report form HERE, and please ask friends who saw it to do likewise. 5.
