Committee Training! To: allsoc(a)list.dcu.ie Ahoy Campers! I'll keep this week's email (comparitively) short... Coming up on Tuesday.... Club & Society Committee Training: Effective Meetings & Committee Roles *Tuesday 17th October 2006, Week 4. 5 to 6 pm, Seminar Room* This training session will teach your committee how to efficiently run a meeting; what the proper procedures and protocols are and the correct roles for each of your committee members. It will explain exactly what the (e.g.) secretary should and should not do; the role assumed by the chair in meetings and so on. This session will be vital for the smooth running of your society for the coming year. We would urge at least two members of every club and society committee to attend. Officially, that is. Personally, I would advise as many of your society's committee as possible to attend. Going to this training session will teach your committee how to get all the business they need to get done in a short efficient meeting. Too often a scenario occurs like this one: Chair: "I think we should take course of action X." Committee agrees unanimously. Other ctte member: "I think that's a great idea, and here's why...." Other ctte member then launches into a 10 minute speech about why X is a great idea. Other members take the ball and run with it and pretty soon there's a full blown discussion going on as to why everyone thinks X is a great idea. There goes a half an hour you're not going to get back. If the entire committee agrees that X is a great idea, then there is NO NEED FOR DISCUSSION. Just action someone to follow up on X and move on to the next point on your agenda. If you don't know what an agenda is, YOU NEED TO COME TO THIS TRAINING SESSION! St. Vincent de Paul Week St. Vincent de Paul week is upon us again! If you're a Fresher, you won't remember the hilarity of the Slave Auction last year (thanks, Fr. John) or the risque-ness of Naked Lab Coat Day. For everyone else, I'm sure you have fond memories... And here's what's happening this year: Monday:- There will be plenty of busking on campus, gate collections during the day. Monday night sees the annual V de P table quiz kicking off at 8pm. There'll be great prizes and a sexy MC! Tuesday:- Slave auction beginning at 9 in the Hub. One of the most successful and funniest nights of the week last year! It's also the first slave auction of this year so...it's definitely not to be missed!! Wednesday:- Coffee morning in the Interfaith Centre Thursday:- The huge finale to the week beginning with Naked Lab Coat Day all day. Then we have a "Naked Lab Coat Day Party" where scientists can continue to wear ONLY their lab coats but ,everyone else, no need to worry there is also a Rubik's cube party, Speed Dating and 80's night planned!! The Hub is definitely going to be the place to be this Thursday. SVP week is the SVP Socs biggest fundraiser all year. All money donated goes straight to the various youth projects, soup-runs and all other projects the students of DCU SVP undertake so...BE GENEROUS!!! Clubs & Socs Weakest Link! Tues, 31st Oct, The Venue We need representatives from Clubs & Societies to contact either me at spcchair(a)dcu.ie or Al at sccchair(a)dcu.ie to take part in the first ever DCU Clubs & Socs Weakest Link! We've even got a host called Robinson! But the best news...? The winning Club or Soc gets 1000 euro for their club or soc. YES, THAT'S A GRAND. ONE THOUSAND BIG ONES. Watch this space! hey guys firstomundo: Id like everyone to email me items for the agenda for mondays meeting. secondomundo: this agenda will be emailed out for monday morning so that everyone knows whats coming up. toidly:Also were also going to be implementing a soloution solving method. hopefully this will speed up the meeting. Finalliage: there will be an action list.We often decide on a plan of action and completely overlook who will deal with the issue. So there will be a list of all actions approved by the committee which will be emailed out with the minutes. ie. action . paint the drama boards>> steven , liana, book rooms for auditions >>> john organise refreshments >>>> pauric and etc etc, this elimainates the grey area around following through on matters discussed at meetings.so can all of you please email me items for the agenda. that means you too pauric and susan. Hi Guys, Quick update on our Musical situation! Liana, Alan and I met with Mr. Jamie Conway (worked with Blackrock college, producer of the City Channel here in town) last night for coffee and stuff. He's a very nice guy - young in his late 20's and very professional. He's very keen on doing the Hot Mikado and totally probed Alan and I about our ideas on costumes, makeup, lighting, sound and the Helix in general. Thank god We've been doing our homework lol Anyway - he's totally in and down for the job! We discussed money and I told him we paid 3,000 euro for a director last year and he said "yep ok we're in the same zone then" he also said that what he does with us isn't work for him - its fun - and he's not looking to make a living out of it! haha Joey likes him already eh? lol So - in short - we have ourselves a new director. Rang Olga this morning - she needs to check her schedule for next year - she mentioned doing something with Maynooth...so hopefully she's free. Then its onto finding a choreographer - Liana and I have a few ideas there- but if anyone has any suggestions....pipe up n' let us know! Also - Jamie mentioned taking on an Assistant Director (we mentioned our Shadowing programme) and I thought maybe Steve, Eoin or anyone with previous experience would be up for that job! It could save Drama hiring a professional next year? or just give someone the chance to direct with a professional, in a highly professional venue. We can discuss it on Monday night!! Hey guys, Gotta a bit to discuss... Panto... Sean, Roisin & Paudraig have all expressed an interest in directing. What to do? Should we audition the role of director or what? Or possibly get one of them to direct and the other to produce? ( I know you're reading this paudraig... I apologise for talking about you in the third person!!!!) Classical Barry Bracken will do the Shakespeare! (READ BELOW) One Acts I'm meeting people who want to direct at 6pm today in Clubs and Socs. Hopefully some interest will arise. Sean said he has a piece he wants to direct. I've attached Barry's email and Seans email below to see what you guys think. Anyway, I would like some reply and possibly an meeting to decide about panto director. Thanks Steve ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Stephen I'm very keen to direct the pantomime this year. In fact I had been planning to apply to do so since the summer. I can submit a proposal and a C.V. of my previous directorial experience to the committee if needs be. With respect to the one act submissions, I have preliminarily selected a short piece by Tennessee Williams called Mister Paradise. regards Seán Kennedy ------------------------------------------------------ Hey Stephen If you'd like me to direct this show I'll do it. Dammit I'd love to! And I'm delighted you aproached me. My choice for piece would be KING LEAR. A very powerful work by the good man. V.dark and v.funny. However is it confined to a "classical"/shakespeare piece. There's some great contemporary drama out there. Harold Pinter or Brian Friel or countless others... If its a problem getting rights then so be it. I know auditions for this have to get off the ground pretty soon. And if its a case of drama having particular types of show throughout the year then I understand. I'm just wondering what the leeway is like for variation here...
