Jupiter And Moon Spectacular Tonight - Huge Media Interest A spectacular sight will be visible in the night sky tonight, September 29, when the giant planet Jupiter will be placed very close to the Full Moon. Visible by the naked eye, Jupiter will appear as a brilliant 'star' just below the Moon soon after sunset (around 8pm) and both will remain visible until dawn. Jupiter Watch is being run in conjunction with Culture Night 2009 which has events running around the country. Irish Planets around other Stars Astronomy Ireland's Autumn Public Lecture will be given next Monday, Sept 14, by Dr. Chris Watson of the Astrophysics Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast, and made available on DVD for everyone in Ireland. Dr. Watson will give a special talk about extrasolar bodies - planets that orbit other stars - and Ireland's involvement in the detection, follow-up research and characterisation of these exoplanets. This is a subject that is fast becoming the most exciting and rapidly developing area of astronomy. The lecture takes place at 8pm on Monday, September 14, in the Fitzgerald Building, Trinity College Dublin and a DVD is available for anyone who can't make it. For more information click HERE. Fireball Investigations continue into the fireball seen over Ireland last Thursday, Sept 3 just after 9pm. Although we have received over 100 reports to date, in 1999 when predicting the course of a meteorite subsequently found in Carlow, we received over 400 reports which helped us achieve this. We are urging you report your sighting to us by filling out a Fireball Report form HERE, and please ask friends who saw it to do likewise. 5. Magazine Offer (3 Issues Free) Events DVDs Shop 1. Fireball Last night, Sept 3, at around 9:15pm a fireball brighter than the Full Moon was seen all across Ireland. Fireballs this bright can drop meteorites and we have already received many reports from people who saw it blazing across the evening sky. If anyone saw it please fill out the online report form at www.astronomy.ie/fireball.html as accurately and as detailed as possible. This helps us in correctly predicting its course and determining if and where it may have landed. As well as this, there have been reports in the media describing lights over Dublin this week, and Astronomy Ireland Chairman, David Moore, was on Dave's World on Dublin's 98 this morning talking about the various reports. Shuttle and tank visible over Ireland The space shuttle Discovery launched on Saturday morning, August 29 at 4:59am and was visible over Ireland 19 minutes later with its huge orange external fuel tank and a small debris fragment (probably ice) just below it. Described by many as the most amazing sight they have ever seen, this is the second time in as many months that Irish people were in the unique position of seeing this rare and incredible event. In July, the shuttle Endeavour was seen cruising over Ireland just after launch with its fuel tank visible below it, sparking huge media interest and causing our office to be inundated with calls and emails from all of you who were eager to report what you saw. The shuttle Discovery is on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) where it will deliver a collection of experiments, and also leave behind astronaut Nicole Stott who is joining the crew on board. Don't forget, If you saw the shuttle and fuel tank last Saturday, email your report to observe(a)astronomy.ie and we will try to include it in the forthcoming issues of our magazine. 2. Jupiter close to Moon this week There will be a very spectacular sight, visible to the naked eye, this week when the Full Moon lies very close to Jupiter on Wednesday, September 2. The two rise around 8pm as the Sun sets, with Jupiter as a brilliant 'star' just 3 Moon widths below the Moon. This promises to be a truly awesome sight with both bodies remaining visible all night long until dawn. Jupiter will again be the centre of attention on Sunday, September 6, as its moon Europa will eclipse the moon Ganymede in a rare mutual moon event.
