Education Programme Events Membership Shop 1. Armagh Planetarium Daytrip This Saturday Every year members of Astronomy Ireland converge on Armagh Planetarium for a very special daytrip. As well as the new show Ice Worlds we'll get a special presentation showing how the DigiStar 4 projector gives amazing recreations of the night sky (it's made by Evans & Sutherland - the same people who made high-performance jet simulators for the world's military!). Our own David Moore will lead a tour of the Astropark and Human Orrery, too! So, won't you join us for our annual daytrip to Armagh this Saturday? Astronomy Ireland’s Education Programme will be running two workshops on Friday, November 25th. One in the afternoon in Wexford library for primary school children, and one in the evening at Wexford Arts Centre for the general public. Our evening talk will give people a ‘guided tour of the night sky. This event is FREE and open to everyone, and it kicks off at 7pm. For more information click HERE. 3. Website Help Astronomy Ireland's website is getting a bit old and needs to be made faster and easier to navigate, as well as have even more content. We have a new server set up and a good bit of work done on it but it's taking longer than expected so we're looking for people to help. We need volunteers (or possibly interns who might want to do something worthwhile that will have a very public face) who can help launch a new website for the society and shop. We have a good bit of it done but there are a huge number of webpages that have to be moved over and/or redesigned. There's even a bit of more technical work if you're particularly good with websites! Was Einstein Wrong? Fundamental Science in Serious Jeopardy! A message from David Moore I love stars! You just can't imagine what they're like, how big, how powerful, how amazing. Their size is what got me started in astronomy. As a child I was amazed to find out that the Sun is 100 times wider than the Earth. I couldn't imagine anything that big. Then I found out that the Sun is tiny compared to the biggest stars in space. I was blown away! But a star is a vast nuclear reactor in space. Nuclear energy powers all life on Earth - there's one for the environmentalists to consider! Even a tiny star like the Sun produces unbelievable amounts of energy. If all 7 billion people on the planet were to explode the world's biggest nuclear bomb every second that not equal the amount of energy the Sun produces. The centre of the Sun is at an unimaginable 15 million degrees Celsius. It burns so bright that a suitcase sized sample would vaporise a city on Earth with its intense light and heat! Yet, despite all this violence and extremes, these seething cauldrons created all the elements that we need to make the material of our bodies and inside the Earth. We are children of the stars in a very real sense. Some stars, the big ones, explode at the end of their life in a supernova explosion that seeds the cosmos with the heavy elements that we need for life, like zinc for example, and elements that we treasure, like gold, and even uranium. When the Sun completely runs out of fuel, the outer layers of the red giant will blow off, creating a huge nebula that we often admire in images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Solar Activity and Astronomy Ireland Sun Shows The Sun is currently dotted with relatively small sunspots - cooler regions on the surface of the star - but a massive group of spots several times bigger than Earth is emerging from the side of the Sun. This group contains the biggest sunspots seen on the Sun for many years. Sunspots are created from localised magnetic fields on the Sun, and can often cause solar flares. This current group of sunspots has already unleashed vast flares into space, which were detected on Earth. As the Sun rotates, the sunspots will eventually face Earth. If a huge solar flare occurs at this point, it could have damaging consequences for our satellites, and will cause spectacular aurorae (Northern and Southern Lights). It is possible to see sunspots from Earth, but only with specialised equipment to protect our eyes. There are websites that will allow you to figure out the time the ISS will pass over, but to receive a message to your mobile each day with the time to see it already worked out simply text SPACE to 57003 (reply STOP to unsubscribe). Each text costs 1euro, and only one message will be sent per day. Proceeds help to promote interest in astronomy across Ireland. Mars Science Laboratory: In Search of Origins The Planetary Society, in association with School of Physics NUI Galway, Galway Astronomical Club and CIT/Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork will present a media-rich talk in Dublin, Galway and Cork during Science Week Ireland, titled “Mars Science Laboratory – In Search of Origins” Kevin Nolan, Coordinator to Ireland for The Planetary Society and author of the book “Mars, A Cosmic Stepping Stone”, will present these highly visual talks showing iconic and 3-D images from the no less than 8 spacecraft operating on and around the planet Mars currently and in recent times; as well as present details of the imminent Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) “Curiosity” mission, due to launch to Mars on November 25th next. MSL –Curiosity is among the most advanced space probes ever launched into space and will look for evidence of past or present life on Mars.
